Our evolving democracy depends on more than
just our presence at the polling-station and our attention to current events.
Our unresolved psychological issues create undesirable effects at the political
level because, as this book contends, what happens inside of us determines much
of what happens outside. Our personal fears, confusion, dysfunction, and
suffering are reflected in our politics, economics, and culture.
This book teaches us fundamental
principles about ourselves as well as about the functioning of our country. It
challenges us to open our minds, illuminate the dark recesses of our
psyche, and understand that democracy and tyranny have their counterparts in the
human psyche.
We have
to understand our own psychology more thoroughly, not only to strengthen
ourselves but to understand at a deeper level the mentality of our
political opponents. As we are strengthened, we can more effectively challenge
the enemies of democracy and soon
defeat them.
